Bred to be close companions to Chinese royalty, these dogs bond very closely with their humans, making them wonderful house pets. They’re especially well-suited to loving families where they can avoid any rough play.
Pekingese tend to bark a lot. The breed can be difficult to housebreak. Pekingese tend to be one-person dogs. Because of their profuse coat and short noses, they do not tolerate heat well.
The Pekingese, which has an average lifespan of 13 to 15 years, is prone to minor health problems like elongated soft palate, patellar luxation, stenotic nares, Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS), trichiasis, corneal abrasions, disticiasis, and skin fold dermatitis.
While children are always intrigued by small dogs, a Pekingese is not a good choice for families with toddlers who may treat him roughly without meaning to. The Peke won’t tolerate being grabbed or poked and won’t hesitate to defend himself. Always supervise any interaction between a Pekingese and a child of any age.
No Surprise: They’re Pretty High Maintenance
Pekes have a “high maintenance” coat requiring especially regular brushing. Their independent, stubborn nature often demands training to achieve their cooperation. And like many dogs bred for centuries, Pekingese can suffer from hereditary problems.
Pekingese are good apartment dogs as the breed is quiet (Pekes do not bark much). Being a low energy small breed, Pekes are suitable for apartment living,which is a pro for Peke owners who live in the city environment.
Pekingese are loving pets and highly protective of the members of their pack. They are not usually welcoming of strangers. This breed requires consistent socialization to ensure they are well mannered on walks and when meeting new people and other dogs.

An aristocrat, whose ancestors can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty, the Pekingese was considered sacred in China and could only be owned by royalty. The perfect dog for an apartment, it loves exercise but not long walks. Intelligent and fearless, it makes a loyal companion but can be hard to train.
The Pekingese is an ancient Chinese dog breed that was so highly esteemed that they became a symbol of good fortune, and artistic representations of them, (Foo Dog idols) became family heirlooms. In Buddhism, the lion is a symbol of Buddha, and this may be the origin of the special position the dog held since in legend, these dogs were thought to originate from union of monkey and lion. A favorite of the Imperial families, a theft of one of these dogs was punishable by death. Earliest records indicate the breed was distinctive by the 8th century. First specimens arrived in Britain in the year1860; one was given to Queen Victoria. The AKC first registered the breed in 1906.
These dogs have always been kept purely for companionship.
Height at Withers: 6-9“ (15-23 cm)
Weight: < 14 lb (6 kg).
Coat: Profuse long coat is straight, stands off, and texture of the hairs is coarse. All colors are allowed. The undercoat is dense and soft.
Longevity: 12-13 years.
Breed characteristics reported include: Regal carriage, bold and courageous, good alarm barker. Stubborn and independent minded (this is a significant characteristic that is encouraged with a resulting personality peculiar to the breed). Calm, good-tempered and affectionate, with condescending air (others term this noble bearing or dignified), and loyal. Socialized early, they are generally good with other pets and children but are aloof with strangers. Some can be aggressive. They have low exercise needs, tolerate heat poorly, and have a snoring tendency. Daily brushing is needed, and they have a high shedding tendency; need lots of human contact. Care around eyes and anus is needed due to the facial fold and in the latter case, hair.
