Some FAQs about Toy Manchester Terrier (English Toy Terrier)

Manchester terrier dogs are great with obedience and agility training. They are also great as watchdogs. With this being said, they will bark a lot, if they aren’t trained not to do so. It is best to train your Manchester terrier early-on for when you want them to bark and when you don’t.

The English Toy Terrier (Black and Tan) is considered to be the same breed as the Toy Manchester Terrier. In contrast with the Toy Manchester Terrier though, the desirable size for the English Toy Terrier (Black and Tan) is slightly smaller, and wider ears are also preferred.

These racy little dogs come in two size varieties: Toy (not exceeding 12 pounds) and Standard (not exceeding 22 pounds). All Manchesters are similar in temperament, body type and athletic ability despite differences in size.

The Toy Manchester Terrier, which has an average lifespan of 14 to 16 years, may sometimes suffer from hypothyroidism, Legg-Perthes disease, deafness, patellar luxation, and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). It is also prone to some minor troubles like von Willebrand’s disease (vWD) and cardiomyopathy.

The Toy Manchester Terrier is a very intelligent, responsive breed who is easily trained to apartment living. Their miniature size makes them ideal for even the tightest living quarters. This is another breed that does best with an owner who is home often; if left alone, they can become destructive and bark incessantly.

These terriers are good with children but will need socialization and slow introductions to other pets; due to their history as hunting dogs, the breed could see smaller animals (including the family cat) as prey. Exercise is also essential. Manchester terriers are athletic dogs that need an outlet for their energy.

If you can locate a Toy Manchester terrier, and you are willing to exercise it enough, it may be a great choice for a first dog. That’s because this well-mannered breed is not known to be aggressive along with all the other characteristics that make it a pretty easy-going dog to own.

Despite their differences in size, all Manchesters share a similar temperament, sleek, sturdy body type, exceptional athletic ability, and signature tight coat in mahogany tan and jet black. The only difference between the two variations of the breed is ear shape. In fact, frustrations over difficulties in shaping the breed’s ears actually caused many breeders to eventually cease breeding these dogs entirely, but there were a few breeders who were devoted to keeping the Manchester alive.

TOY MANCHESTER TERRIER

Toy Manchester Terrier (English Toy Terrier)

The oldest British toy breed, the English Toy Terrier as know as Toy Manchester Terrier used to be called the Miniature Black and Tan Terrier. It differs from its larger cousin, the Manchester Terrier (opposite), only in its size and its erect ears. English Toy Terriers were popular as town pets during Queen Victoria’s reign, when toy dogs became fashionable. Before that it was a rat-catcher. Like other terriers, this breed veers from cuddly family pet to voracious rodent-hunter. It bonds with its owner and makes a good watchdog. Because it is small, the English Toy Terrier needs less exercise than the Manchester Terrier and adapts well to city living.

The Breed History

Originating in the British Isles, the original Black and Tan progenitor terrier for this breed was a heavier set dog with a coarser coat. In Manchester England, history records that a fancier who wanted a dog for both hare coursing and rat killing bred a whippet and a crossbred ratter terrier. Other breed ancestors potentially include Greyhound, Italian Greyhound and Dachshunds. AKC recognition occurred in 1886 (Toy) and 1887 (Standard). Until 1959, the two sizes of Manchester were two separate breeds. The toy was developed from the standard.

Breeding for Function

Vermin control was the primary purpose for these dogs. As a ratter in the field and in pub pit rat killing contests they excelled. They were courageous enthusiastic hunting companions. The toy variety was a lady’s pet. Both varieties are now valued show and companion dogs.

Physical Characteristics

Height at Withers: Standard 15-16 inches (39-40 cm).

Weight of Standard: 12-22 lb (5.5-10 kg)

Height at Withers: Toy 10-12 inches (25-30 cm).

Weight of Toy: 7 up to 12 lb (3-5.5 kg).

Coat: The sleek short hair coat is black with mahogany markings; distinct, not smudgy borders—well defined pattern.

Longevity: 14-15 years.

Points of Conformation: These dogs have a long muzzle, flat wedge-shaped skull, slight stop, and their bone structure is sleek and athletic. Ears are naturally pricked up, and the dogs are a bit longer than high. Almond-shaped slanting close-set dark eyes, and a strong jaw ending in a black nose characterizes the face. Ears vary only slightly with Standard ears being erect, cropped, or button. Toys must have naturally erect ears only. The neck is slim, slightly arched and moderately long, the topline has a slight arch, chest is narrow but deep, abdomen is mildly tucked, and a slightly curved tail tapers to finish just short of the tarsal joint.

Recognized Behavior Issues and Traits

Reported breed characteristics include that they are: Agile, loyal, intelligent, they respond well to obedience training. They maintain a well-developed chase instinct, so should not be left off-leash unless in an enclosure. They are excellent watchdogs, and enjoy close contact with humans. They require minimal grooming and are low to moderate shedders. They should be socialized early to other pets and people.
